The power of surrender

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

In the heat of battle, every army knows its strength, its limits, and when defeat is imminent. There are clear steps that signal surrender, namely; ceasing all hostile activities, showing unmistakable signs of submission, laying down weapons, and remaining still. It would be foolish to resist in such moments. A wise general knows when it’s time to surrender and will not pretend to do so, especially when lives are at stake.

Yet, how often do we wage war against God? We resist His will, clinging to control until casualties emotional, spiritual, and relational pile up. History has shown that God always wins. In this battle, the wisest choice is to cease our resistance.

History tells us that Israel had a pattern of resisting God, choosing their own way, fighting His guidance, and doing what seemed right in their own eyes. But time and again, this rebellion ended in pain, loss, and death. Like ancient Israel, we often assume we know best. We choose our own paths deciding who to marry, where to live, what to pursue even when we know God hasn’t approved those choices. We lean on our own understanding, ignoring His guidance. Their story is a sobering reminder that self-will leads to destruction, while surrender leads to life.

“Many who profess to be Christ’s followers have an anxious, troubled heart because they are afraid to trust themselves with God. They do not make a complete surrender to Him, for they shrink from the consequences that such a surrender may involve. Unless they do make this surrender they cannot find peace.” — Ministry of Healing, p. 480.3

There comes a time when we must lay down our weapons. The wounds caused by stubbornness run deep and take years to heal. Israel’s rebellion led to pain and death and we risk the same when we fight against God.

We often think we have life figured out. Our plans align with our fleshly desires, and we chase fleeting pleasures. We hold tightly to things God has clearly told us to release. The tighter we grip, the deeper the pain.

It is time to show clear signs of surrender. With hands lifted high, we proclaim: “…nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Luke 22:42 (KJV). This is the declaration of surrender; an acknowledgment that we are not capable, that we relinquish our power and understanding, and give it all to God.

Humbly, we bow at the foot of the cross. The white flag is raised. Our souls are still. We declare our desire for peace with God. No longer striving to control our lives, we give Him everything our lives, our families, our choices. Our will is forever His.

“Self must be wholly surrendered to Christ. ‘Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.’ [Colossians 3:3] You are to surrender your ownership of self to God’s ownership.” — 17LtMs, Ms 168, 1902, par. 31

Reflection
What am I afraid to lose by surrendering? How many casualties am I willing to witness because I refuse to relinquish control to God? What will it take for me to stop fighting and say, “…nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done”?

Prayer
Dear Lord, please forgive me for my stubbornness and hard-headedness that have caused You and others pain. Help me to surrender wholly and commit everything I am into Your capable hands. Teach me to be still and trust You to work in me according to Your perfect will. Here I am, Lord; I come to You. When I falter and fall, hold me firm and bring me back to my knees. I surrender all to You. Amen.
