Isaiah 64:6, Isaiah 45:24
Throughout the Bible, one truth stands out: human beings, in their carnality and fallen state, cannot produce righteousness. There is no pure goodness that can emanate from the human heart. Every good act like, love, generosity, or any other virtue is just performance without God’s empowerment. The Book of Isaiah describes such efforts as “filthy rags.” Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, humanity is doomed to fail in its attempt to be righteous through its own strength.
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Isaiah 64:6 (KJV)
Our strength and righteousness are derived solely from the Lord never from ourselves or any other source. We often stumble in our choices because we fail to rely on God as our source and pillar of strength. Trusting in the arm of flesh inevitably leads to disappointment.
“Surely, shall one say, In the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.” Isaiah 45:24 (KJV)
Reflection:
- Is my righteousness motivated by my own efforts and selfish reasons?
- Have I exhausted myself trying to be righteous without the help of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, we humbly come before You. Help us to trust in You more than in our own unrighteous deeds. Cover us with the blood of Jesus and empower us to overcome our sinful habits. Remind us that without Jesus, we are nothing and can do nothing. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
