The Silent Death of Spiritual Complacency

Colossians 1:9-11 (KJV)

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

As Christians, we can sometimes slip into spiritual complacency. We feel as though we’ve already arrived, settled into truth and spiritually secure. We see no further need for growth or improvement. We may understand prophecy and interpret the Bible well, yet we leave no room for advancement.

This mindset can lead to spiritual stagnation. We confuse comfort with security and settling into truth with relaxation. But settling into truth, both mentally and spiritually, doesn’t mean we stop learning. Rather, it means being so rooted in truth that we remain steadfast in it while still growing.

Colossians 1:9–11 reminds us that continually increasing in the knowledge of God strengthens our Christian experience. It helps us bear fruit, develop patience and long-suffering, and do all of it with joy. We must let God’s power work in our lives, transforming us into the image of Christ.

Let us not become spiritually stagnant ever learning, yet never arriving at the knowledge of the truth. Instead, let us pursue growth with humility and a hunger for more of God.

Reflection

Are there areas in your spiritual life where you’ve become complacent?

What are you doing daily to grow in your knowledge of God and His Word?

What steps can you take today to rekindle your spiritual growth?

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive us for the times we’ve grown complacent in our walk with You. Revive our spirits and renew our desire to pursue a deeper, ever-growing relationship with You. May Your Word continue to teach, transform, and shape us into the likeness of Christ.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
