The Fulfillment of Prophecy

Jesus, being God in the flesh, spoke prophetic words to His disciples, foretelling their offense and abandonment of Him. Quoting Zechariah 13:7, Jesus said, “All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad” (Matthew 26:31-32 KJV).

These words were fulfilled as the disciples, despite their love for Jesus, forsook Him on His way to the cross. This event highlights two significant truths:

  1. Jesus knew the Scriptures intimately, quoting Zechariah 13:7 to illustrate the disciples’ impending abandonment.
  2. God’s Word never fails; it always comes to pass. As Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that he should lie….”

This prophecy has an end-time application. Just as Jesus’ crucifixion and abandonment by His disciples were foretold, so too is the coming “mark of the beast” (the Sunday law). Many who have professed to believe the truth will join the enemy’s ranks because they were not sanctified by the truth (GC 608).

“As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth will abandon their position and join the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they will come to view matters in nearly the same light, [choosing] the easy, popular side [when the test comes]” (GC 608.2).

Reflection

  • How well do I know the Scriptures, and am I prepared to stand firm in my faith when trials come?
  • Am I sanctified through obedience to the truth, or am I vulnerable to being swayed by the world’s spirit?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to know Your Word intimately and to stand firm in my faith, even when trials come. Sanctify me through obedience to Your truth, that I may not be swayed by the world’s spirit.
