James 5:16, Genesis 32:26
People who persevere until they achieve their goals, no matter the cost, are greatly admired by the world and applauded for their determination. Despite numerous obstacles, they push through barriers and are ultimately rewarded for their unwavering effort. How much more true is this for us who believe, when we prevail and persevere in prayer?
“Ask, and it shall be given you…” (Matthew 7:7)
We often think that asking once is enough to receive. We become indolent in prayer, assuming God already knows how much we need what we’re asking for. Yet we fail to realize that persistence in prayer cultivates earnestness and deepens our dependence on God. It intensifies our desire to receive what we seek. We do not receive because we do not persist and so our prayers do not prevail.
“God does not say, Ask once, and you shall receive. He bids us ask. Unwearingly persist in prayer.” Prayer 71.1
If God gave us everything we asked for immediately, we would become spoiled Christians who always expect to receive without playing any role ourselves. We would grow selfish and entitled.
“…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16)
Effectual fervent prayer is sincere, earnest, and deeply heartfelt. It is a prayer of agonizing faith, expressing the soul’s longing for God and not merely for His blessings and gifts. It is prayer fueled by the Holy Spirit, refusing to give up until an answer is received. That answer may not always be what we asked for, nor arrive when we expect it, but our Father gives what is best for us at the perfect time. Believe as you ask that you have received it. Do not let go of the arm of God too soon.
“Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith. The promises are sure.” Prayer 72.1
Just like Jacob, though injured—wrestled with the angel of the Lord until dawn, and when asked to let go, he cried, “I will not let You go unless You bless me” (Genesis 32:26). We too must press to the throne of mercy with the same attitude of faith, refusing to let go until God grants His blessing. Prevailing prayer melts the heart of God to grant what He sees as good for us. It leaves no stone unturned and no room for regret, because it persists in truth and certainty.
Reflection
Delayed prayer tests my persistence and faith. Will I endure the delay, holding onto God’s promises until my prayer prevails? God always hears and answers prayer. Will I recognize those answers and accept them, even when they differ from what I wanted? I’ll keep wrestling with God in faith like Jacob until I receive my blessing. Will you make a vow to never give up on God’s promises?
Prayer
Lord, help me hold on to Your hand of promises in faith and not let go until I see Your promises fulfilled in my life. Give me patience to wait on You for every request I make, while my heart is filled with thanksgiving for what You will do. Like Jacob, teach me to wrestle with You in prayer until all my prayers prevail. In Jesus’ name, Amen
