Killing the Guard Dog

Matthew 14:9

Herod, the Roman-appointed leader of Jerusalem, was a complex figure. Despite being born to an Edomite father, he was raised as a Jew and believed in the Creator God of heaven. The Jewish religion emphasized knowing the Scriptures by heart and holding to traditions. However, the Jews, including Herod, were often blinded by these traditions, unable to understand the Messianic prophecies they knew so well.

In Matthew 14, we see Herod arresting John the Baptist for rebuking him for his sinful actions. Although Herod knew John was a prophet of God, he eventually disregarded his conscience and committed the horrendous sin of beheading John. The Bible describes Herod’s state as “sorry” when he killed John, highlighting the dangers of disregarding our conscience.

When we disregard our conscience, we are essentially killing the “guard dog” that warns us against evil and sin. We are numbing the medium through which the Holy Spirit communicates with us. This is a deadly mistake, as it leaves us vulnerable to sin and its consequences.

Reflection

  • Have I been muting my own conscience, despite its conviction of the wrongs I’ve been doing?
  • Have I realized the dangers of such actions, which can lead to dire consequences?
  • I want to realize the importance of my conscience and seek help to listen to it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, We acknowledge the complexities of the human heart, as seen in Herod’s story. We pray for clarity of vision, that we may see beyond traditions and understand the true meaning of Your Word. Help us, Lord, to receive Your truth with open hearts, and not be blinded by our own preconceptions.

Amen.
