He Leads in the Paths of Righteousness

Psalm 23:3 (KJV) “He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His
name’s sake.”

This Psalm of David is one of the most echoed of all the Psalms and often recited as a prayer in
schools, workplaces, and homes. Within it lies a profound truth in verse 3: God leads us in the paths
of righteousness. Today, let us explore what these paths truly mean.

This entire chapter portrays God as a shepherd tending to His sheep. The verses describe how He
cares for us, and then declare that He leads us into the paths of righteousness. Psalm 119:172 tells
us that His commandments are righteousness. So, if He guides us to righteousness, it means He leads
us to His commandments.

But what are His commandments? They are, in essence, a reflection of His character. Therefore,
when He leads us to righteousness, He is guiding us, as His sheep toward His very nature.

Do you see the beauty in this? Most shepherds view their sheep as mere animals who are unable to
think, and certainly not capable of reflecting the shepherd’s character. But God says, “Don’t worry. I
know how it’s done. Just trust Me as your Shepherd, and I will enable you to live and carry yourself
the same way I do.”

So what does it mean to live like God? It means to love what is good and hate what is evil. He leads
us into this love for good and hatred of evil. That’s mind-blowing because it reveals just how loving a
Shepherd He truly is.

The book of Proverbs says that those who love good and hate evil are wise. This means Go
doesn’t want you to be a blind, foolish sheep but a wise one, able to stand firm. Isn’t that love? I
believe it is. Deeper than any earthly love is the love of our Shepherd.
I hope this message has touched your heart and inspired you to let Him be your Shepherd.

Reflection:
Have you been living like a blind sheep, longing to see and be wise? Have you been under the influence of an unloving, uncaring shepherd one full of selfishness? Do you desire to live under the care of a loving Shepherd?

Prayer:
Our Father who is in Heaven, I have a deep desire to say “The Lord is my Shepherd” with full
understanding of what that means. I am tired of being led by selfishness and confusion. I ask that You please be my Shepherd. Take me in as Your lost sheep, and lead me in the paths of righteousness. Amen.
