Finding Refuge In God

Psalm 46:1-3 NKJV

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountain quake with their surging.”

Life’s troubles have a way of clouding our vision, making it easy to forget that God is our refuge, strength, and ever-present help. We can become so fixated on the darkness and despair that we lose sight of the One who offers shelter from life’s storms. God’s presence is our shield, protecting us from the enemy’s attacks. So, why do we allow fear to grip our hearts? Why do we succumb to anxiety? It’s often because we forget that the Creator of the universe is on our side. We need to learn to be still, to trust in God, even when the world around us seems to be crumbling.

Our minds should not be governed not by fear, but by the unwavering knowledge that God is in complete control. This is the very lesson the disciples needed to grasp when Jesus slept peacefully in the boat amidst the raging sea. Jesus, upon waking, rebuked the storm and brought instant peace. He can do the same for us. The imagery of mountains being moved and cast into the sea represents the overwhelming challenges we face. This passage doesn’t promise an absence of trials; rather, it offers the comforting assurance that in Jesus, we will find peace amidst those very trials.

Whatever you are facing, remember that you can experience a peace that transcends understanding and some comfort that surpasses human comprehension. Since God resides in your heart, what is there to fear?

Reflection:

  • Where in your life are you currently experiencing “the storm” ? Are you focusing on “the storm” or on God’s presence within “the storm”?
  • Think about a time when God brought you peace in the midst of a difficult situation. How did that experience strengthen your trust in Him?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being my refuge and my strength. Thank you for your promise to be with me always, even in the midst of life’s storms. Lord, I admit that I often allow fear and anxiety to overwhelm me. Forgive me for my lack of trust and please help me to fix my eyes on you.

Lord, I bring before you the following challenges that I am facing, [mention your specific challenges]. Help me to remember that you are in control and that you can bring peace to any situation. Teach me to be still and to trust in your presence. Help me to cultivate a heart that is filled with your peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding. Thank you for your love and your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
