Being Blameless

Proverbs 11:20 KJV: “They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.”

Throughout Scripture, we are urged to be faithful, honest, and blameless. The question is, have we ever paused and pondered what it really means to be blameless?

In Proverbs 11:3 (NKJV), the word used is blameless, yet the ESV translation uses the word integrity. This means that being blameless equates to living a life of integrity. Living a life of integrity is one of the highest demands in the Christian walk. It means there are things that are permissible and things that are not, in order to maintain a life of integrity. As Christians, we ought to live as Christ lived—that is, to live a blameless life before humanity and in God’s eyes.

In Psalm 119:1, more clarity is shed on what it entails to walk blamelessly: it is to walk according to the commandments and precepts of God. The word walk here refers to doing, more than the literal act of walking. This means that, in order for Christians to be blameless and to be approved in the sight of God and men, we need to keep the commandments of God. To keep our integrity intact, we must keep God’s commandments.

This requires a power beyond human strength—we need the Holy Spirit to enable us to keep the Lord’s commandments wholly and entirely. Is it not wonderful that God Himself is willing to help you become more like Christ, if that is your desire? He wants to enable you to walk blamelessly before Him and to make you Christlike.

Our Lord and Saviour indeed kept the Lord’s commandments when He was here on earth; He was blameless before God. If we profess to be Christians and do not keep the commandments of God, we are liars—and we know that lying is a sin. That proves we are not walking in integrity.

Reflection:
Do I realize the importance of walking blameless before God?
Do I understand how far-reaching the effects of living a life of integrity are?
Am I in need of help in order to live blamelessly?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come before You seeking help. I have been living a life that is different from what I profess. I have claimed to be a Christian, yet I have not kept Your commandments. I pray that You may enable me, through the power of the Holy Spirit—to walk blamelessly before You. Amen.
